Painting star players

Post by DixonCider »

do you paint star players to follow team themes or by how they look in art?

example Morg plays on almost every team, but I have no desire to get a Morg for every team. Should I paint him according to art or suck it up and get as many as needed? What about star players that only go to one or two teams?

Unhelpfully, both?

I tend to paint stars that are shared between teams in generic or non-specific colours (Although rarely the original art colours), and teams that are designated for a specific team in team colours.

Even though it won´t be much help either.

I don´t use many star players.
I painted up my Goblin and Ork star players to go with my Goblin/Ork team (who share the same colors)

I do own 2 Morg miniatures (2nd and 3rd edition) but will paint both of them in the colors of my human/ogre/halfling teams, who will share the same colors

I´ll paint up Zug and Grif the same colors as the rest of my humans, because that´ll obviously be the team I´ll use them in

I painted up m dwarf star players like the rest of m dwarf team.

I guess all in all I paint up the star players using the colors of the team they will most often play in, but at the same time try to color match teams sharing star players.

actually that helps, thank you both. I am slowly trying to get every team, and stars as required. I don't typically play star players, but I would like the option if it is available.

Think I will go similar to the team I expect to use them with the most, but still general enough that they can be used in multiple teams.

I have too many minis, so I use alternate sculpts for different star players if it will fit the sculpting style of the team (or preferably be made by the same sculptor)

For example:
- for the 5th ed Human team, I use the 5th ed Ogres as team ogre and Morg (not 3rd ed Morg, as he's not of the same style)
- for 3rd ed dwarfs, I will stay with the 3rd ed Deathroller, since the new 5th ed Deathroller is of a completely different style.
- etc

I paint them depending on the player if they play for a specific team (humans only etc.) I will paint them to look like the team.

However 3rd Ed Morg was painted in the Chaos Allstars colours as he was the captain of the team in the old fluff and he can play for any team. There is really no mistaking Morg anyway.

I lost the plot and set my self the goal of having every star player/inducement/staff for every team.

So i am well on the way to having 21 Morgs painted to match each team

I think it depends on how attached to your teams you are.

If you are going to just play 1 or 2 teams pretty much exclusively then it is nice to theme the stars to your team, especially those that can play for multiple teams. So for a Nurgle team I did, Borak and Gnashrak were painted in the team colours as well as having mould and pustules added to them, but less than the rest of the team.

You do have to be a bit careful if you are using a non-“official” model (either because there isn’t one or you dislike the GW version) as you’d want to easily differentiate between Griff and a normal human Blitzer. To avoid this I will use a similar colour scheme but either reverse it (red trousers with white top compared to white top with red trousers) add colours such as using gold over silver or add extra details like edging or a pattern.

If on the other hand you play a lot of teams or share stars between a group of you then it is probably better to paint the stars in a colours so they stand out. That way it will be easy to tell them apart from all the models on the table. Some stars only play for 1 race or play for several but are most associated with one (Zara on zons or willow with wood eleves).

If you are going to do a unique version of each star then you’d need you’d need 144 models which is quite a lot. But I do like the idea of theming some stars, maybe a good and evil Morg, a female helmet for zons etc.

I paint most of my teams the same colour, so stars match!

It helps to define what you want out of your collection.... For me, there are the stars that my Necro/Undead/Khemri teams will share, and they are primarily in the Granite Grey and Lightning Blue of the shared assets teams.... Having said that, the Ogre I use for Morg was painted for the beginnings of a Pact team and has their Gold and Red colors... so I guess it just depends....

My bottom line: stars get painted in the colors of the team they are most likely to play on regularly....

I have a few Humans Griff and Mighty zug painted under team colours but mainly because I can use these as positional blockers or blitzers if I feel like it or star players. Other stars like Zug I have painted in different individual colours, I own two but one with a blade and one without. I genrally think its up to how your going to use them and how often your going to field them with teams you play.

I paint my Starplayers in colours different from the team (or teams) they will be playing for, for 2 reasons:

1: I'm not going to paint 21 Morg's (and 7 Zara's, 4 Eldril's etc.)

2: Star players, by definition, do not belong to the team, so they don't wear the team colours.

I also paint my Star Players with different colours from the team they would be associated with, often witgh schemes that are the opposite of the team (my Wilhelm Chaney is an albino with blue shoulder pads while the wolves in my necro team are black with yellow-to-red markings, for example).

our league use stars, in the 3rd ed format. in fact, we have a card file for about 150 star players culled from verious sources. going way back to 2nd ed.
we paint our stars in their own colors. makes them stand out, and adds some class to them.
