Stars are by definition "Freebooters" to use the 2nd ed nomenclature and don't belong to the team so I'd imagine they'd have their own gear. That's how I paint mine anyway, but either way is fine.

I paint them in their own distinct color scheme (but not necessarily how they are painted in official sources).
I like this because I can use the Star on multiple teams if needed and it helps the opponent easily distinguish the star from my normal players, and ease-of-identification for my opponent is always one of my top goals.

Used a completely different model for Heartripper from the rest of the team, painted in team colours and did his base white with a star on each side.
