I like playing Dwarfs for just this reason. Preventing that is a skill, and keeping it going consistently is a skill. It's not just about getting good, it's about playing your game as well as you can, and Dwarfs are a great barometer for bashing skills. Also, having lots of Block and access to lots of Guard means you can start early-on going into "suboptimal" fun bash skills and stay competitive.JJB wrote:I'm sure there will be some other coach that will say something different, but in my experience, overall yes. Dwarves are good for a slow and safe game. If your opponent is fast and has a streak of luck allowing him / her to steal the ball from you, you've probably lost 2-0 because you'll be too slow to catch up with them.Coach Grievous wrote:Hmmm. Do you all stop playing dwarves when you actually become good at the game? Because that's the only reason I can understand the results in general. I know I won't play dwarves anymore in normal league circumstances.

I find that mildly absurd, to be quite frank. To me dwarves are the "training wheels" bashing team. They make it so easy (except maybe in a very mature environment dominated by ClawPOMB teams) and that is why I don't personally like to see/play them in environments with experienced coaches. Now picking suboptimal builds with them.. well, that is an interesting idea. Out of interest, what would such a build be as an example though?

That's where we'll have to agree to disagree. I like sharks in my pool of opposition.Coach Grievous wrote:I find that mildly absurd, to be quite frank. Heh, "Guard as much as possible" is pretty much standard, and well... sure, Grab spam is usually not the standard, but I would say Grab is definitely a power skill for Dwarves (but in what exact amounts is up for discussion certainly). So, not really suboptimal, I'd say.mattgslater wrote:viewtopic.php?f=25&t=37171Coach Grievous wrote:Now picking suboptimal builds with them.. well, that is an interesting idea. Anyway, point being and coming back to the thread, I think dwarves are ridiculously powerful (and that opinion solidified only after I actually played dwarves, so it's not at all about being a hater, not that I like facing them either) so I'm surprised to see it not have a larger share in the polling.

Dwarfs are more extreme than powerful. If you play into their game, they're really good. If you don't, they're not. Being slow, clumsy, and all-ST3 is not a good combination, and their difficulty in scoring or recovering from setbacks means that if you run Dwarfs over time you'll see yourself pulling in a lot of ties where other teams might win or lose.

I'm intrigued that Necro scored so highly. As I mentioned up thread I did very well in my primary league with a Necro team (6 finals appearances, 4 wins). Are other people seeing this? That Necro a are contender in their leagues?

It's no secret why Necro succeed. Cheap linos + great runners = good combination, pure and simple.

They are like some kind of ork/rat hybrid. Disgusting, resilient and efficient. And yea, in my home league, one of the longest running (and most successful) teams is a Necro one.swilhelm73 wrote:I'm intrigued that Necro scored so highly. In a short league... Necro are hard starters.... If they ever get going (6 games minimum... 12 most definitely) then fearsome it is.... Definitely a fine team around the 1.5 TV level....
I just started an Iron Man league with Aahz and D.... Necro fields a fine full roster (all positionals and 5 zeds) but crashed hard against the inherent rerolls of the human team I faced.... Oh well... on to game two....

Re: Your most successful (=matches won) race in league?
I think that I have had most success with Dark Elves just because you can get them going straight out of the box. AG4, 4x block MA7, 2 RRs and you are pretty good to hassle opponents in to doing something stupid and nick the ball.
I haven't played Orcs or skaven but they are a good starting team expecially in short league format.
My Necro team would win more matches if I brought them back to the league. After 13 games they are hitting their stride and with the skills available I think I'd build on my wins.

I salute the other two coaches that picked KHEMRI, as I did! A fine team, balanced (if overly nerfed) and a challenge to coach!
Hats off to you sirs!

The relative lack of Amazon answers is also somewhat baffling!

I'm not saying that Amazons are the best team in table top by any means, but I did pick them for this poll as they were the team I personally have had the most success with in a league. I played them for two seasons going 18-0 and winning the league twice, of course it helped out greatly that it was the first two seasons of our league so there were not any highly developed bash teams for most of that time.

T, thanks for winning that league with Amazons - now I don't have to play them.Fist of Gales wrote:I'm not saying that Amazons are the best team in table top by any means, but I did pick them for this poll as they were the team I personally have had the most success with in a league.
