Re: DreadBall - The Futuristic Sports Game
from what I have seen of the teams, while cool in their own way, I am not liking them. I do like the Space Gobbo's, and may get a set to start a underworld team with them. The weapon hand will work great as claw, if only they had a two heads option out of package

Re: DreadBall - The Futuristic Sports Game
It's a great, great game. I've played about a dozen games and it's a fresh, active take on a "Sports Board Game": games are quick (45 to an hour), atmosphere is tense.
In my opinion game balance is not quite there, and will require a good deal of work before it really reaches its full potential but the fundamentals are sound and most of all the game is fun. After all, it arguably took 15 to 20 years to balance BB, I think 6 months will do wonders for Dreadball
Here's a quick view of the my "primed and prepped" Striker kit (I'll do full color schemes when I get the rest through the mail).

Re: DreadBall - The Futuristic Sports Game
I love the uneducated comparisons between BB and Dreadball (and those who have their head in the sand), yes they are both sports games
it is like comparing Zombies!!! v/s Zombieside. They both have zombies and use d6s.
If one is so hell bent on trying to fit a round peg in a square hole by all means knock yourself out.
Those who go into a new game with an open mind will like it or not for what it is. If they go into a new game expecting it to be one they are use to will be tarnished by bias.
If you cruise over to the Dreadball forum you will find the depth being discovered by players between the teams and on board play.
ps. update on the Female Corp.
Jacks get Run Interference (don't know how many you can get but my money is on 2 (4 total). They get 4 coaching dice and 0 cards to start.

Re: DreadBall - The Futuristic Sports Game
Dreadball and Blood Bowl share a good deal of similitudes, but mostly they cater to the same "niche", i.e. "Fictious League-Play Sports Board Games". Really, there's not that many games in that category (SportsClix?), so of course Dreadball and Blood Bowl are going to be compared, dissected and pitted against each other, if only for playing time!
That's not a bad thing in any way.
To be fair, they share a lot more than "both being sports games". Quick examples: 1)failed pickups causing turnovers and 2)"Tackle/Threat Zones" causing penalties to rolls. These rules do not HAVE to be part of the design, but then again they are sound game principle and they work, so that's why they're used in DB too.
That being said, It's fine. Fact of the matter is, I like DB a lot, and right now it fits my gaming needs better than BB does, so that's my story really. I appreciate a lot the fact that it plays quicker and that it's easier to explain to new players as the mechanics are (still
) pretty consistant. My biggest peeve right now is that it's not seen a lot of "action", so balance is a bit sketchy, and I wouldn't bet on "deep league play" being very viable right now. But it's only going to get better, and that's great. Can't wait for the new teams, too.
PS: Interesting on the Female Corp, they're going to be a headache to play against with all those RIs. Where do you get your "dirt" on this?

Re: DreadBall - The Futuristic Sports Game
I think it’s a good thing they made the rules different.
All the Bloodbowl variants (dungeonbowl, 7’s, streetbrawl etc) tend to suffer in comparison to the normal game. Sure they are fun for a while, but usually there will be balance issues or they won’t have the long term play of the main game. Now they are adding more varied teams the image can develop it’s own character. Hopefully they are working on interesting fluff and making not only the teams unique from each other but also the ability to tailor them as they develop.
It is obvious that Mantic have aimed all their games at the GW crowd, let’s face it that is their business model. They didn’t have to release the game with sci-fi humans, orcs, dwarfs and skaven as the main teams. Had they instead chosen the robots, humans, cthullu guys and Judwan then it would have been more distinct.

Re: DreadBall - The Futuristic Sports Game
I got to play this last week, and had a truly great time.
If anyone cares, I scribbled some thought (although you might want to skip the mechanics discussion).

Re: DreadBall - The Futuristic Sports Game
I played a demo game at CanCon, thoroughly enjoyed it, and have ordered my own copy. I suspect the game will get a loyal and fanatical following, the main question being whether interest will be sustained (only time will tell).
The one very strange mechanic (to me) is that you can win the game in 1 turn (more commonly in 2, but a 1 turn game is possible, it had happened to my demo game opponent).
My question is simple: how do you fit 1 or 2 turn games into tournaments where other tables are taking (say) 45 minutes to play their 14 turn games? Ditto for league nights.
As a side question, I wonder whether DB can cope with mis-matches in coaching experience. Won't the experienced coach beat the noob in just a few turns? Whereas BB seems quite good at coping with big differences in coaching experience (a hidden but important strength of BB).
All the best.

How are you winning a one turn game? Score turn 1 and then score on opponents turn?

I'm interested in seeing what the game has to offer.
Wished I got on the backer for this.

Re: DreadBall - The Futuristic Sports Game
Had hoped to have a go at the Welsh Open, but Mantic never showed. Seems the demo'er had a family issue, and had cancelled on the Monday, but no-one from Mantic bothered to tell Hawca. Not the best way to go about encouraging people to give it a go.

Currently an ex-Blood Bowl coach, most likely to be found dying to Armoured Skeletons in the frozen ruins of Felstad, or bleeding into the arena sands of Rome or burning rubber for Mars' entertainment.
