Well, I've finally finished painting my first team from the box set I got a month ago.

I haven't painted before, aside from splodging some colour on some D&D minis about 30 years ago, so I owe all my thanks to this great community for the tips, help and motivation to get on with it.

Now, I've got to get on with the humans so that I'm no longer pushing indistinguishable black blobs around the field!

On with the team photo (apologies for phone-cam quality)...

I dry brushed the highlights and, even though it looks fine from a playing distance, up close it looks quite chalky.

I'd be really grateful for any and all comments or suggestions for improvement.

Those look quite nice! Evan more if you dont paint for such a long time. The colour scheme works perfectly too, so congrats for a good job!

Good job! You said they have a "chalky" look, and I find that happens when you dry brush with your colours lightened with a pure white. To avoid this I use a cream colour to lighten my base colour. I use GW's bleached bone for example, but any bone colour will do. Personally, I think you have managed a more than acceptable TT quality! S.

They look great! Well done! You'll have to post the humans as well when you're done with them. What colours are you thinking of using for them?

Thanks for the feedback, guys, it's much appreciated.

The colour scheme was loosely based around my old rugby club... just with less green skin! That said, the props would often turn up looking that colour after a "busy" friday night

Blammaham - thanks for that tip. I'll give the bleached bone a try on my humans and then resist the urge to repaint them all when it looks better!

Thanks nonumber. Will definitely post them when I'm done. I'm going for red, white and navy blue - based on the Gloucester rugby team... or, as we like to call them round here, "Glawster!".

Nothing wrong with these at all. Especially for a first go. Don't worry about the chalky look. It happens easy enough. Another suggestion to experiment with to go with blammahams is to try watering down your acrylics a little. It will let more of the base color show through and give you a smoother look.

I recommend test figures for practicing this way though because it's very easy to have failures when getting the proportions of water to paint right.

Oooo nice tip on the chalky look. I go over the dry brushing with a wash of the main colour it blends all the layers closer. Nice job on the Orcs like the colour scheme.

@pressie - Thanks for the feedback and the wash tip.

@siggyllama - They are the transfers that game in the box

I'm not unhappy with them but even after a matt varnish they do leave a noticeable film around the number. I completely messed up the first couple of transfers on my human team so I'm going to have to paint the numbers freehand - I'll let you know how it goes!

This is your first painted team and you have to be proud of it.
If you think to buy in the future more teams I suggest that this team has to remain as it is: don't make any modify or re-painting or whatever.
Becasue is a good result.
The plastic minis from the BB box are less detailed, many flat surfaces and it's a real challenge to paint them.
If I can give some suggestion for the future:
1. find your way to paint your figures : you can mix up the colours to get different tones (darker or lighter) or you can use many different colours of same tone (light yellow, dark yellow, darker yellow, etc).
2. look at most common tecniques and give them a try: drybrushing,shading, highlighting, washing,dipping, etc - you can find tutorials on you tube, etc
3. put on all of your passion: when you make something with passion the result is guaranteed.
