Slicing it right - conversions

Post by DinoTitanedition »

Due to request, I am putting some of my conversions up and will talk a little about the way I go at a project.

First off, a player and the coach for my next project, an Ogre team. The 40K grotbox offers about four to five nice to convert players. As you see, I use the elbowplate of a fantasy blackorc quite often, since it fits so well. The guys won`t seem to big, as long as you leave off the helmets. But honestly, there is just too many cool bits to not use ´em.

Image

Since I love greenskins I do know enough about their background to know that they are fairly superstitious and it fits the background of a sportsman as well. Therefore all my greenskincoaches have a lucky motivationsquigg.

Image

Converting is always a great load of fun. You get to individualize your team very much and you have the opportunity to give your players character an depth. While converting my minis I absolutely always think about a small backgroundstory for each player. This guy for example is the fourth incarnation of this character, the orcish blitzer Thrat the Threat. I also have to mention, that I try to avoid buying new stuff as long as I still have the bits that fit my wishes. Most of the time it pays off to put a little more work into your minis and use some of the leftovers you have.

Image

When you do conversions, another important fact is, that the overall picture has to fit. A starplayer can stand out, that is his role, but as you build your team, you want to think about, how the team should look in the end and if it would look odd to have to many different models in the team. A Rackhamwerewolf and GW Wilhelm Chaney could be two werwolves on a necromantic team, but would probably not fit too well.

A balanced look on a team is of importance
Image

If you still wish to implement other minis, use background storys. A khemri team from Numas could have two lving models as blitzers, since living and undead coexist in this city. So why not resemble that on their team? Still, if you do so, make sure the blitzers look fairly alike, so that positions are clear and so they look fitting in the team.

This guys here is, believe it or not, the coach of my undead team. When a fan once threw a rock at his head the only logic explanaition to him for still being alive was, that he must be undead. In orcish manner of course, he doesn`t care about the fact that he`s still drinking, feasting, smoking, and so on. And just like ANY greenskincoach, he has a motivationsquig.

Image

Another way of making it work, is a strong colorscheme. In this example I converted an old mummy to be part of my undead team, but while building, I realized, that the old mummy wasn`t really good looking right next to Ramtut, which I used as my other mummy. The only way to make it work, was to use the same colors and be consistent in the colorscheme.

Image

So that`s it for now. If you want to take a closer look at my undead team, you can do that at the german tabletop-forum. Of course, even thou it`s a german forum, you can still post in english. I guess we`re all on the same page languagewise here

You can do that here: http://www.tabletopwelt.de/forum/showth ... p?t=146670

I have just found the wonder of the black orc elbow plate while trying to covert for a dwarf team independently of this thread. Maybe the elbow plate is an universal constant:D

Oof....you guys are asking me questions! Let me see if I can still remember all that...

Head: from the driver of the orc boar chariot
Facemask: from the commando-sprue of the fantasy orcs regiment-box, simply cut off about the half of it`s hight
Legs and left arm: from the bannerwielder of the fantasy-ocs regiment-box
Body: out of metal from the old tankbustas, 40K range...but any body with some armorw would do the job
Right arm: the arm itself, fantasy-orcs regiment-box; the claw was constructed by the top pieces of the 40K Nobz back pieces and a knife from the fantasy-orcs, which was cut from it`s owners hand; the leatherpieces on the side of the hand are leftover pieces of a sprue itself, which I just cut into a fitting size and glued them on, so the would look like leather attachements after painting
Right shoulderpad: 40K Nobz
Lef shoulderpad: chaos-marauders regiment-box

And that`s all I belive. Most important ingredients are a little creativity and patience, and above all, the willingness not to rush the paintjob (even though I COULD`ve done this better).

Cheers.

beautiful paint jobs and conversions. I also really love converting and agree that a paint job can really help bring different models together.

Seconded. As for some additional motivation, I`d like to show, that leftover bits can always be assembled to fit your needs. This zombie for my undead team was also completely made of leftovers.

My next team will be an ogre team. Even though, there is a lot of good looking ogreteams out there (immediately thinking about the GW ogres and Meiko`s ogre team), I`ll simply cut some stuff together from an ironguts box. Still, for further inspirational purpose, I`d like to see any of your conversions. So if you got anything, no matter what team, show us.

Cheers

The picture is a little far a way, but it seems to have a real nice overall look. What`s with the dice? Are they magnetic?

Nah, they're the green NAF dice which I couldn't read, so I made a reroll counter!

That`s a good idea. I have green ones with red signs on them. I actually might do that too.

And even though I allready postet this in another topic, I thought I`d put it up here too, since the conversionjob came out allright.

@Dino:

Thanks for showing us the conversions. I really felt in love with that zombie-conversion, once I saw it on TABLETOPWELT.DE. Think I'm going to steal your idea

By the way, I have answered to your thread in the german forum. Perhaps we can arrange a match

@Dino:
That zombie is awesome!
Just love how effective your use of plastic (and leftovers) is.
Furthermore; the paintjobs are just lovely.

Keep up the good work (and show us more ;) )
