How to paint a Stone Troll?
Hello,
I have a Ripper miniature that needs to be painted. I was wondering how to paint the 'blue' stone trolls. I looked for a tuturial on the net, but I didn't find one. Anyone has some tips to paint the blue scales and the white underbelly?

Cheers,

Re: How to paint a Stone Troll?
Well there are 2 main ways, easy and difficult.
In the easy way you use a basecoat that is close to what you want the final colour to be, then give it a blue wash, if you do it lightly you can repeat it if it isn’t dark enough. Then go back over it with the base coat and finally highlight any bits that really stand out.
For the white belly decide on an area where it will end and how dirty you want it to be. Then give it a white base coat and a suitable wash (brown for dirty, blue or light grey for clean) and go back over it in white.
The harder way is to start with a darker version of the blue you want and slowly build up highlights. Keep the paint watered down for more subtle highlights and gradually paint a smaller area each time building up to mid blue. You may want to jump to a very light blue for sharp highlights such as muscle definition or knuckles.
For the belly it will likely be bordered by his chest and loincloth so you only have to worry about the edges. Start with a mid blue and gradually build up to white, I’d suggest adding bone colour to the blue 1st and then adding white to that mix. The hardest part is the very edges of his belly as it will be quite a drastic change over a small area so the watered down paints will help with this blending.
For scales give them a dark base coat and then paint them a much lighter colour leaving the darker one in the recesses. You can then go over it with a wash to make them look less flat. If you have the patience you can go highlight all the edges with a fine brush, but this can be pretty time consuming with a lot of small scales.
Since he’s a stone troll you could also paint him grey, but it depends on how well that suits the rest of your team.

Re: How to paint a Stone Troll?
I've never been a huge fan of the blue stone trolls personally.. I don't think stone is blue, so why should stone trolls be blue??
if I were to use that scheme I would use Space Wolves Grey (or whatever they call that colour these days) and slowly highlight up, going all the way to an off white for the belly area..
my stone trolls are grey, actual grey, as opposed to blue grey... I gave him red scales for contrast.. which may not be to anyone's liking other than my son, who thinks he's wearing a Spiderman costume..

I really like that grey troll.
After reading a bit about trolls (Terry Pratchett) and their cultural highlights (Koom Valley Day) I also lean towards more natural skin colors.
I´m thinking of sandstone for mine.
There are many shades of sandstone, but most are somewhat warmer in tone then basalt or slate grey.

Years ago someone painted a sandstone troll over in the Impact forums (and talked about how he did it), it was to die for. Still my favorite troll I have ever seen.

Re: How to paint a Stone Troll?
Hey, thank you all for the replies
A sandstone troll eh? Not a bad idea, not bad at all. Since I have several trolls to paint (blood bowl and warhammer), It's worth to give it a try: a sandstone troll, a granite troll, etc.
Thanks again for the great ideas
