+1 from me. Great product.

For satin and gloss finishes I use Vallejo acrylic sprays. Not cheap but very good in the damp, Mancunian air, and very tough.

One layer of Satin/gloss, followed by one layer of matt:)

do you find your teams look like they are in wet vinyl when completed? I did my skaven in gloss varnish and it seems they are a little too wet looking

I found that some inks are not waterproof and the varnish, being water based, melted them. Same issue with watercolors. And with lacquer based varnish, it attacked felt pen marks.

Best advice: always give the full method a test. Get a sprue or left over metal, and paint as normal, all the steps, from priming to varnishing.

the rat ogre below was where the I had the issue with GW inks and GW varnish on a GW rat ogre just above the belt on the right hand side. not a big deal, live and learn

it is odd I used the same technique on the Bones Troll and had no issues

a better example of what can be done with the bones troll is here with some green stuff skill: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=38851&p=688812&hil ... es#p688812

not really. mean to say, i can live with the slightly wet look, as long as the figures are protected. and KRYLON works very well. :D
believe it or not, there was a timewhen i did'nt use anything

Ok, I used the guide on previous page and still got really gloss test ones, not used spray matt yet but the paint on one from instructions should matt the finish quite a bit am I doing anything wrong?
started with gloss from B&Q, is modern one, white in tin and water based all that jazz.
then paint on matt specified in guide (cause it was there so just got it as easier)
is still really shiny!

Vallejo matte should dull it down, if it hasn't just reapply it. I find it often runs off raised areas on the first coat.

If you are using a matte from B&Q, that's the mistake and you've discovered the reason I don't suggest using anything like that.

the B&Q one is gloss, very similar to wickes one from what I can make out :-)
will try the vallejo again, will be third one though.

Can't think of a good reason why the Vallejo matte isn't doing the job. I normally do two quick, dilute coats before finishing with aerosol and that's enough.
Unless the B&Q gloss is some kind of hyper shiny gloss, which it could be I suppose :D

I had the same on one of my fave teams so will never use the stuff again. Bad enough when GW's stuff is overpriced and mediocre without it being poor.

Now I use paint on vallejo matt varnish, I like this as I can give extra coats easily to the most exposed parts. But I mostly use plastic minis nowadays sp varnish is less of an issue than with metal models.

Brush on? Shake it well? Maybe the matting agent is at the bottom of the bottle, so you are getting "gloss" or "satin".
