Pitch preferences? Your thoughts, please!

Post by Wifflebat »

So I've been giving some thought to building a custom pitch, and I was wondering about a few things:

1) Do most of you out there prefer square counting or the range ruler for passing?

2) Do you prefer to play on a "regulation" size board, or one where big guys fit better?

3) How important is exact passing measurement to you? (For example, have you ever been annoyed that a custom field seems "off" in its measurements?)

4) Do you prefer dugouts on the same side of the field, or across the board from each other?

5) Can anyone think of a good reason to have a first half and second half turn track, as long as the half is indicated somewhere?

Anyone have pet peeves as far as stadium tile size, layout, or anything of that sort? Anyone ever run across a field you refuse to play on because of ergonomics or inaccuracy?

Please share your thoughts!

1) square counting

2) I usually use a regulation sized board(from FFields), but the 40mm boards are much nicer to use if someone has a lot of over sized figures like Chaos Dwarfs or Ogres

3) as long as the dimensions are explained up front I am ok

4) I prefer them on the same side, there should be some sort of label on what bin is what though

5) stands can get out of hand, some of the amazing looking pitches online look like they would be difficult to use because of height and depth of the stands

1) Do most of you out there prefer square counting or the range ruler for passing? Square Counting is more consistently accurate.

2) Do you prefer to play on a "regulation" size board, or one where big guys fit better? 40mm boards are better IMO.

3) How important is exact passing measurement to you? (For example, have you ever been annoyed that a custom field seems "off" in its measurements?) I feel that it's relatively important.

4) Do you prefer dugouts on the same side of the field, or across the board from each other? 6 of one, half a dozen of another for me.

5) Can anyone think of a good reason to have a first half and second half turn track, as long as the half is indicated somewhere? As long as the half is marked, no.

1) Do most of you out there prefer square counting or the range ruler for passing? I actually like both, mostly use range ruler for interceptions, though.

2) Do you prefer to play on a "regulation" size board, or one where big guys fit better? Like both.

3) How important is exact passing measurement to you? (For example, have you ever been annoyed that a custom field seems "off" in its measurements?) When the field seems off or homemade, I use the chart.

4) Do you prefer dugouts on the same side of the field, or across the board from each other? I prefer on the same side but it's not a big deal if it isn't.

5) Can anyone think of a good reason to have a first half and second half turn track, as long as the half is indicated somewhere? As long as the half is indicated somewhere.

Anyone have pet peeves as far as stadium tile size, layout, or anything of that sort? Anyone ever run across a field you refuse to play on because of ergonomics or inaccuracy? Haven't refused to play on a custom field nor ever had someone refuse to play on one.

i think all the answer can be found in those articles :
http://bloodbowlstadium.over-blog.com/c ... 37033.html

this is the best pitch ever. Everything has been deeply thought to make it very good looking AND playable at same level (and movable).

score counters, weather, turn markers, rerolls, dugouts, everything is smoothly and ergonomicly integrated. and there is even some special tracks to roll your dice and avoid them rolling on your minis.
i believe every custom field creator tend to do something like this.

I'd seen that fabulous field, but not the construction thread. I'm going to have to learn French!

I'm surprised that people seem to favor the same-side dugouts. When I saw that FF was making their fields that way, I thought that might be the case, but I still find it odd that people don't prefer to "face off" across the table, so to speak. I may be going my own way on that one. :D

Square counting. Ruler might be used as a quick approximation, but final checks are done by square numbers. We still use ruler to measure interception zone tough.
puzzlemonkey wrote:2) Do you prefer to play on a "regulation" size board, or one where big guys fit better?
30-35mm square is ideal for me
puzzlemonkey wrote: 3) How important is exact passing measurement to you? (For example, have you ever been annoyed that a custom field seems "off" in its measurements?)
Important, but counting sqaures solves all the problems.
puzzlemonkey wrote: 4) Do you prefer dugouts on the same side of the field, or across the board from each other?
doesn't matter at all. It mostly depends on other element's composition.
puzzlemonkey wrote: 5) Can anyone think of a good reason to have a first half and second half turn track, as long as the half is indicated somewhere?
Not a single one. I'm going to remove it on my own pitch when I start it.

I find small (<30mm) fields annoying, but the worst thing is having squares not marked good enough. Make sure they are clearly distinguishable. It's also useful to add some extras on every 4rth or 5th row of squares, it makes it easier to count squares for fast moving teams or long passes.

1) range ruler
2) Regulation, I just don't put Big Guys on massive bases
3) I don't like playing on custom boards that aren't regulation because of this
4) Either is fine to me, but I prefer the pitch lengthways instead of sideways between myself and my opponent. On my pitch from FF-Fields the dugouts are on the same side of the pitch, witch saves space in that the board is narrower than it would otherwise be.
5) I just re-use the one track, again to save space. Unless you have a really bad memory and can't remember if you played the first half...

The range ruler gives different results for some lengths when compared to the square counting grid, and some official rulers actually vary in length. In our league the former is assumed to be intentional and the latter unfortunate, so the ruler is used only for interceptions.

Given that, square size is not a big deal (though really the standard game board is the worst culprit for this).

1) Do most of you out there prefer square counting or the range ruler for passing? Ruler, it's quicker and I have yet to run across TFG in Blood Bowl that tries to argue Short or Long Pass.

2) Do you prefer to play on a "regulation" size board, or one where big guys fit better? 40mm is all I'm comfortable on now. Big Guys or even dynamically posed players ruin the regulation size board.

3) How important is exact passing measurement to you? (For example, have you ever been annoyed that a custom field seems "off" in its measurements?) What's important to me is both coaches are in agreement with the range that is being thrown.

4) Do you prefer dugouts on the same side of the field, or across the board from each other? No preference.

5) Can anyone think of a good reason to have a first half and second half turn track, as long as the half is indicated somewhere? Not really, no. Why would one even need a half indicator? Can't remember if eight turns have already been played or not? Time to stumble home, mate! :D

I assume you are asking these questions to prepare for your own custom built pitch? If the work shows effort and care then anyone will be pleased to play on it; that is my experience!

I like both, but seem to favour "square count" lately. It tends to avoid arguing.

2) Do you prefer to play on a "regulation" size board, or one where big guys fit better?
Normal size.

3) How important is exact passing measurement to you? (For example, have you ever been annoyed that a custom field seems "off" in its measurements?)
Quite important.
But with "square count", it doesn't really matter if there's some pitch size difference.

4) Do you prefer dugouts on the same side of the field, or across the board from each other?
On the same side. Much like in the original.

5) Can anyone think of a good reason to have a first half and second half turn track, as long as the half is indicated somewhere?
No, not really.

I've once seen a pitch that seemed "flocked" with sand. Not sure I'd play there with painted minis.
Other then that, if the pitch is a bit too big, it gets uncomfortable after a few minutes (let alone for 2+ hours).
