Ravens II

Post by SinisterDexter »

Hi all

A bit of history...

Waaaaay back in the late 90s I got in to Blood Bowl. A few mates used to play and humans were my staple team. I had a couple during that time - the Hochland (and eventually Soaring) Hawks, the Araby Scimitars - but eventually I converted a human team that was named the Drakwald Ravens. Playing in black and bone, this team followed me through the next decade and I developed a stable of players like Jock "the Hammer" Hammerstein, Helmut Wissen (the most incompetent thrower ever) and Felix Jaeger. In the early 2000s they became the Marienburg Ravens after a big move into the city...

Fast forward to 2008 and I started playing again after a break. My painting was improving and I had a few teams on the go. I created a Bretonnian team called "Le Coq" that became my first SSB team. But the real reason I went with a Bretonnian theme is that I have never really found a human team in the traditional style that I like.

Now, finally, I am finally starting to have a crack at a new team.

The Ravens II will be a generational team, including many of the children of the original team, including Jaqueline "the Jackhammer" Hammerstein and her twin sister Sloan "the Sledgehammer" Hammerstein. Steele Lindenbaum is new blood to the team, but is the first to be painted.

The figure is from the Pulp City range, "Deadeye". It is slightly large for a BB figure, but it is of absolutely lovely quality. I am still very unsure how the rest of the team will be sourced, but I am hoping that Hero Forge (when it starts up properly) will provide at least a template from which further conversion can be done. I really want the traditional clothed feel with the subtle shoulder pads. It might be a while before I can actually get to that point, but hey, I have 18 months or so...

Anyway, here he is, I hope you like him...

Lovely bit of work. Particularly like the highlighting job you've done on the black, that's a real bugbear of mine, so it's nice to see it done well.

Looks great.
I too am dissatisfied with the existing human teams.

How did you do the highlighting of the black?

Slowly and painfully! :)

Black is a real issue for me, which is another reason it has taken a decade to get this team started. It's really hard and I tried a couple of recipes here before I got one I liked.

I start with a charcoal colour (mine is a Heavy Charcoal from Vallejo). I then two-brush-blended the shadows in black, although I made it a bit more of a deep shadow than I would for most other colours (i.e. - the shadows extended further than they would otherwise). Then I used P3 Bastion Grey for the first highlight and added white twice to achieve the final effect. I tried to stick to a rule that I was taught by Meg Maples, which is to do the same highlights as you would for any other colour, but in about 25% of the area you normally would. I probably went up to a 50:50 mix of Bastion and White.

I'm still not 100% happy with the black, but it's getting better.

Depends on the GW figure...!

It's not too oversized. It would fit quite well with the scale of many of the oversized heroic scale we are currently seeing in alt manufacturers. It is probably a head taller than the GW human team though.
