I wonder who r3 was talking to before he made his Khaos team? :P

Yea, definately start with:

11 Beastmen
4 Re-Rolls
6 Fan Factor

4 RR's allow you to win early games cos you can pick up the ball and RR all the BLOCK/SKULLS you get.

Buy the time you can afford your first CW (3 games) you should have 5 or so Beastmen with a skill (Block) and the team progresses alot more smoothly.

Balrog, one of the first replies on my initial question pointed your stuff out to me. It seemed to make a lot of sense, and was really useful. It convinced me to start with a different roster than I first thought of :D

Yeah, saw that, I just wasn't sure if you'd read it - a bit of self-promotion never hurt anybody... ;-)

Well, I started the League last night with:

3 Rerolls
10 Beastmen
1 Mino
8 FF

I won 1-0 against Amazons, but while only causing 1 cas myself (BH) I received 3; my mino went down in the last turn of the 1st half; for a blitz I rolled: Skull and Both Down :pissed: Luckily he will only miss next match...
This result on the block dice caused me quite some blocks, including a blitz to free a beastman who could then run in a final TD (for 2-0) in the end of the second half...
Other casualties were a SI Beastman (Niggling) and a Dead beastman.
Furthermore I rolled a 1 on the FF table and a 6 fr winnings (90,000).

I have never had to play a match with less than 11 players before, so next match will be interesting...

I started a team with 11 Beastman and 4 RR. They have progressed pretty well. The first player to get a Star Player roll received +1 AG. From that point on, I played Elf-ball with them. It worked well with the 4 RR. I didn't pick up a Chaos Warrior until the 6th or 7th game. Even then he was my main ball carrier on offense and blitzer on defense because I didn't want to change playing styles.

1-0 against Amazons
I have the feeling that this was not a very representable match to test such a starting roster. I had the feeling that I was playing Chaos, not amazon, and vice versa.
Should have made 1-1, but was too greedy...

Aah!! Why did you take a minotaur? Ogres are so much better on a Chaos Roster.

Although if you took the mino for fluff reasons then I fully understand.

OK, the second match went less good (what do you expect with only 9 beastmen on the field)

I lost 2-1, if I had had more players and remembered the speed of the skinks, I might have prevented the last TD though...
I did kill a saurus in T1 :D

I spend my winnings (80000, rolled a 6 again!) on an apothecary, and
i now have 60000 left I'm saving for a Warrior (hopefully after my next match)

One of my Beastman got an increase (still only one...); +1AG!!! :D

How should I use this guy?
Should I A) get him a new skill asap by scoring TD's?
B) use him to pick up the ball and then get it to another beastman

Furthermore; is a closed (Dwarf-style) cage the best offense, or is there a better way?

Cheers

Personally I'd recommend using him (the AG 4 guy) as your ball carrier. Put him back deep to receive kickoffs, and his AG will allow him to more reliably pick the ball up, as well as dodge or pass if the situation forces such. The only thing to watch out for is to not have him suck up too many SPPs that it takes away from your team balance.

And even though you started your team already, personally I tend start a chaos team with high FF, a couple Chaos Warriors, and settle for only 2 TRRs. Even though the fewer TRRs prevent me from trying as many moves, I use the extra strength to my advantage in a defensive game. I position my players, don't make too many extra blocks, and force my opponent to risk turnovers and burn up TRRs in tough dodges or blocks. Additionally, I like starting with some Chaos Warriors so they'll get SPP earlier.

The other thing I'll mention, is to not be afraid to use your Chaos Warriors (when you get them) to handle the ball. With ST4 guys the obvious temptation is to put them on the LOS and brawl their until the whistle blows, but the versatility of the Chaos Warriors is what you're really paying for. With AG3 they're just as good ball-handling (and even dodging when the situation requires) as your beastmen, and are only 1 MA point slower. IF you're able to stuff the ball onto a CW, not only will he be a lot harder to try to knock over but he'll also get the first SPPs needed to start picking up useful skills. Also, if he starts the turn with the ball, and with an opponent next to him, he usually has the option to make a blitz action, get a 2-dice block, and continue his forward progress. By contrast, a beastman wouldn't be able to, since they need to take a step before blocking to get the +ST from their horns.

Anyway, hope that boggy babble made some sense, I haven't slept in a while. ;)

David

P.S. For those who don't already know, I originally started playing Blood Bowl as High Elves, and they're still one of my favorite teams. However, after going almost a full race rotation in Christer's FUMBBL, it was made clear that I was in the favor of the Chaos gods above all else. You can see the standings for my current Chaos Team (Utter Domination) in Tim's REBBL here: http://www.rebbl.com/Rebbl/standings.htm

well, tonight is my 3rd match; against Undead...

He's got (after only 3 matches) block on both mummies, a Ghoul with sidestep, one with catch and 13 players in total.

Any last minute tips?

Hope I come though this one unscathed...
