Treemen Sculpts

Post by Wirelizard »

I'm in northern Alberta, roughly 1200km from civilization as I usually understand it, and to pass the time I brought putty and some sculpting tools. I decided to start with a pair of treemen, because I want 'em for BB teams and because being humanoid but not human exact proportions and detail is less important. A human with extra-long arms is deformed; a treeman with extra-long arms is just a treeman with extra-long arms!

Everything has to start somewhere. In this case, "somewhere" is a washer, a piece of scrap paper to cover the hole, paperclip wire, and superglue.

The treemen in the most recent photo I've gotten online:

I've since started the heads on both of them and the hands, using thin wire to form the hands. I'll be switching to greenstuff (from terracotta Milliput) for the hands and other details as it's stronger in thin sections than Milliput.

Thanks! They've been fun to sculpt, as my first full-on sculpts there's been a definite learning curve.

Main thing I'm learning is that I always wind up with too much putty mixed up! Hence the LED tealight altar piece, which exists basically to use up excess Milliput. Some of the Milliput and all of the greenstuff gets turned into small symbols and detail pieces that I'll eventually add to other projects.

Here's a more recent photo of the treemen and altar. Big treeman has hands properly started, smaller treeman has his wrists modified and fine wire to form fingers with added, and the altar has another layer of stonework added. Still no heads on either treeman, but I did neck stumps and have put a bit of greenstuff on the "antlers" on the smaller treeman.

Wow, I had the same idea to use those LED tea lights as reroll counters for my team the Frozen Flames (when I use the reroll, the flame is extinguished). Yours have a more flamey shape than what I found on short notice, though!

Love the look of the "Frozen Flames"! Chaos Pact, judging by the mix of figures?

I'm actually going to be pulling the current "flame" shape off and doing something more realistic over the LED, probably involving hot glue and ink to make red/orange translucent flames.

I like the idea of using lit/dark LED candles for reroll markers. I honestly started the altar as a side project with no specific purpose in mind except using up excess putty and practicing sculpting, so reroll markers are as good a use as any.

I've got a new blog post up with some more in-progress pictures, and some talk about sculpting tools: http://www.warbard.ca/2014/09/28/sculpt ... es-skulls/

Here's the most recent pic from that blog post. Faces in progress, hands likewise, and the altar has kind of erupted in skulls all over, because it turns out skulls are easy to sculpt and kind of fun. This might explain years of GW's output, incidentally...
