Re: How to make a custom pitch portable

Alright,

I got myself four boards that are each 42 cm x 30 cm. Put together, my pitch fits on it nicely. It is the felt pitch from Impact!, which I modified by ironing my team name and symbol on (print out - iron on kit). My plan is to fill the space around it with sand glued to the boards. Then paint on some crude dugouts and put an orc head shaped rock center beside the pitch. Then go for some advertising sides and a scoreboard.

Does anyone have a good hint on how to drill a neat hole into the sides of the boards without me destroying them?

How thick are the boards? And what are they made of?

They are 12mm thick and made of MDF. Rather heavy, but I wanted to go for something durable and strong.

If you don't have many tools, the easiest would be cutting/sanding a slot as wide and deep as the magnet (diameter for round or side for square < 12 mm), then reconstructing the top and bottom with epoxy (so go with a magnet 8-10 mm as biggest, so epoxy has some thickness). All you need is a file capable of eating MDF and patience.

Code: Select all

------------
             Side view of board edge
------------

----+--+----
    | | Slot cut
----+--+----

----+##+----
    |[]| Magnet [] and epoxy #
----+##+----
Make sure you carve the slots aligned in edges of both boards.

Just remembered, you can also buy rectangular ones. So you can pick, eg, 8 * 16 * 1, and make 16 mm slots that are 1 mm deep, and cover the 2 mm above and below (2 + 8 + 2) with the putty.

If you do have a drill then I'd go with 6mm disc magnets, it'll leave plenty of material either side and you don't need to drill deep so minimising the chance of breaking through the surface. Drill a 1-2mm pilot hole then move up to 5.5mm, use a brad point drill bit and take it slow.

If you do mess it up, never fear - you can always fill with putty. The biggest risk is putting the magnets in the wrong way round so triple check the polarity before you stick them in!

Thanks for the replies and ideas!

Okay, so I started work.

I went with the disc magnets 6mm x 6mm. I drilled 2 fitting holes on each connecting side and glued the magnets inside the holes.

The magnets fit evenly.

The thing I was worried about the most... cutting the felt pitch. It went quite smooth though.

Since I have some RPGing to do tonight, I will continue tomorrow.

I just gotta say: I am so thankful this thread exists.

I'm in the (slow) process of making a pitch for myself (out of extruded foam insulation), and I was planning to do a stupid interlocking design. Getting some magnets is a way better idea, and has completely renewed my interest in doing this project. Thanks to all for their participation and ideas, even if they weren't directed at me!

Furthermore I glued "wooden boards" behind the end zones which will later be my turn and reroll counters and I am generously glueing sand around the pitch.

And finally I am building some advertising boards to be placed beside the pitch.

I was thinking and looking quite long what to use for that and finally I found the answer here:
http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthrea ... Hirst-Arts

Wooden coffee sticks. perfect size and they can be cut easily into the right size.
By the way, I am using Ponal PVA (?).

Scoreboard is comig along. I am using magnetbands on the back of the score markers to put them up on the board later.

Hmmm, that refreshing taste of a cool Bloodweiser after a good match of Blood Bowl...
I present: advertising!

Sorry I'm a bit late to the thread, but Back-2-Base-ix make a product that effectively does this. I don't remember the name, but if you go to their website it's easy to find. I made a board that collapses into 3 1'x1' squares and 6 1'x4" strips plus a 1'x1' dugout (effectively a 1'x1'x4" block.
