Big Guys - Round or Square bases?
As someone who is new to the tabletop world, I'm curious whether there is any certain preference toward round or square bases for big guys. Is it ok to use either type of base, even if they are larger than a typical 30mm pitch? I see some big guys that appear to have 40mm square bases. Are those acceptable for play even though they won't fit on most pitches?

Personal opinion.
No ... the 40mm do not fit a normal pitch correctly circle or square.
I spent a couple thousand dollars to have a 30mm base created just so Big Guys could be based and fit on a BB pitch. Use those.
You can get them from several places:

Re: Big Guys - Round or Square bases?
It's not a rule per-se, but it is common practice for Blood Bowl minis to be based on round bases.
It's a little odd really when square bases would make it easier to show prone vs stunned for some minis. That said, I do prefer the look of round bases.
I'd also avoid 40mm bases unless you really can't fit your mini on a 30mm base. You can probably get away with it for a single big guy, but in general minis that overhang squares can be a bit of a pain when there's a big mass of players in the middle of the pitch.

Re: Big Guys - Round or Square bases?
A lot of Big Guy sized miniatures come with 40mm square bases because at the time the only base GW made that was larger than 25mm size (round and square) was the 40mm square base.
In second edition this larger base size was included in the rules so Ogres, Trolls, Minotaurs and Treemen (the only monstrous players in 2nd edition) actually took up four squares and made the rules even more convoluted and complex. Extra large scatter template requiring a D12 is a fun example.

Having played with a team that had 7 players using 4G mm round bases I can back up how much of a pain it is to play with them on a normal pitch.
That being said, square bases are actually more practical. It wasn't such an issue with old flat looking metal models, but a lot of the newer CAD drawn ones don't have obvious front or backs and tend to roll around when prone.

Re: Big Guys - Round or Square bases?
40mm bases for big guys is very common, my Krox is on a 40mm base. 30mm would be a little more snug, sure, and I will probably get him on one eventually but if all you have is a 40mm base then go with it. Many people do.
However Blood Bowl players should be on round bases for me.

I got a bunch of round 35mm bases from these guys
All my big guys go on these.
A big no to 40mm square bases - much too big for a standard board.

Of course if you pick up one of the larger new BB teams and play on a 40mm square field, it looks good as well

Re: Big Guys - Round or Square bases?
i have a few(10 or so) big guys on toms 30mm round bases and i highly recommend them. i have well over 60 big guys, and if it was;nt for the fact that most are painted and flocked on 40mm rounds, all my big guys would be on the 30mm rounds. i just don't want to pull the painted big guys apart, but i do intend to use 30mm rounds in the future.GalakStarscraper wrote:Personal opinion.

Seconded! I was skeptical of the 40mm pitch until I played a match on one. Now there's no going back.Chris wrote:Of course if you pick up one of the larger new BB teams and play on a 40mm square field, it looks good as well

30mm round is easier for play but some figures just don't sit well on 30mm bases because of the leg poses so in this case 40mm round are best in my opinion.
