Conversion ideas

Post by Regash »

I couldn't find any thread with this topic, so I thought I'd start one.
If there already is one, please feel free to shout at me loudly or boo me. :orc:

I do love teams that have been converted from other miniatures.
Most of the original GW teams just aren't my taste.
I really liked how my WH40K orcs turned out (the models, not the paint).
I really loved the idea of having chaos warriors with chopped legs for chaos dwarves and so on.
But for some teams, I'm just clueless from what to convert them.

Dark elves and skaven, for example. Or amazons.
My try on a skaven team with WHFB rats was an abysmaly bad idea!

Mind, I'm not looking for just some teams from other manufacturers, I'm looking for conversion ideas, preferably with pictures.
And I think, every idea is worth posting, maybe some others get inspired and will thank you for the rest of their now happy and fulfilled (blood bowl) lives... :D

So, let the posting begin, conversions we want!

I'm looking to build a human team because I don't really like any of the minis out, gw, meiko, impact etc etc.

Kit bashing lots of whfb wh40k to get a unique aggressive but fast looking style

One of the good things about GW plastic models is that you get so many bits in their boxes. Often these open up all sorts of interesting kit-bashing possibilities. Often other fantasy armies or even some of the 40K range are ideal sources for Bloodbowl teams.

I made a dark elf team using legs from corsairs, heads and torsos from warriors and arms from High elf shadow warriors. The Blitzers used cold one rider bodies with blackguard arms and heads.

Image

For skaven the stormvermin make great blitzers and throwers. You could mix in parts from the clanrats for the linemen. I've seen ghouls with skaven heads make great looking gutter runners or even entire teams of skaven.

Image

I experimented with a generic female elf made from dark eldar bits that could be used as dark elf, pro elf, human or amazon.

Image

But ended up using bits from the mordheim range with dark eldar legs to make a zon team.

Oh, wow... :o
Those dark elves look fantastic.

I saw >>>this video<<< where one claimed to have buildt a whole dark elf team from 2 boxes of Dark Eldar, warriors and wyches.
Unfortunately, he showed off only two minis, so I don't know if it is true.
I almost ordered these boxes but then hesitated.

Unfortunately, my WHFB and WH40K days are long gone and so is my bitz box.
I just recently felt the Blood Bowl itch again, so this was the place to come to.

Could you be more specific about skaven conversions?
That's one I really haven't seen any decent ones yet.

Oh, and where can you get shoulder pads from?
That is what's missing on my lizards, for example.

Impact Miniatures do some great numbered shoulder pads.

I've done a few converted teams - you can see my lot here: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=37194&start=518

Of those you mention, I've converted Dark Elves and Skaven.

My favourite conversions are probably my dwarfs though.

The dark eldar range is great for making dark elf bloodbowl teams but they do often have weapons and other high-tech bits moulded onto the bodies and legs which can be a pain to remove. The backs are particularly difficult and the arms tend to look a bit awkward when you remove the weapons. I
The old plastic dark eldar bodies and legs have a lot of potential, the legs with the spikes removed are great for normal elves or humans.

Getting whole kits from GW can be pretty expensive, though in some cases it is possible to sell leftover bits on again. You might want to consider bits services on e-bay or specialist sites. It can also be possible to buy someone else's leftover parts in 1 go as they will often not have much use for spare heads or arms.

@ Shteve0:
Wow, tell me more about those skaven, they look very nice.

I tried WHFB skaven and they're all so small and hunched...
Don't like 'em.

They're similar to spubbbba's I believe - the linemen and throwers are half a box of warhammer skaven stormvermin, the blitzers are one of the warhammer skaven heroes and a model from the island of blood set (as is the ogre), and the gutter runners are crypt ghouls with plague monk heads and some tails I bought online. I split the stormvermin set with someone on the boards here, you could do the same with the ghouls too.

Some pointers:

Confrontation (The old metal ones, not the prepainted plastic ones) have some great minis that can be converted. Especially for dwarves, chaos dwares and potentially undead and high elves. Here's a link to my CDs:

viewtopic.php?f=23&t=27005&hilit=Chaos+Dwarves

Reaper miniatures has some nice stuff especially for undead. I plan on doing some undead pirate theme team (already have the minis) in the near future. http://www.reapermini.com

And, GW still has some potential.

- a box of chaos marauders plus a yhetee gives you a full norse team if you buy some extra bitz
- a box of night goblins, two trolls and some bitz to make secret weapons are all you need to get a full goblin team (did that, but no pics)
- as mentioned before, the dark eldar range has almost perfect models for dark elves
- Ogres: all you need is a box of bulls and some old metal snotlings (did that, didn't cost me more than 50 Euro at the time, not sure on the prices nowadays. No pics unfortunately)
- you can go even further: I've used necrons for my khemri team (sorry no pics) and a whole smorgasbrod of bitz for my nurgle team (viewtopic.php?f=23&t=39816&hilit=nurgle). But the Nurgle turned out quite expensive o be honest (Forgeworld torsos etc...)

I have also seen some dwarf teams using the Avatar of War slayer regiment

Bought myself a box of storm vermin today.
And that rat ogre from starter box on ebay,

The only thing worrying me are the gutter runners.
The ones posted earlier just don't meet my taste.
But right now I'm kind of stumoed on how to make 'em stand out from the linerats....

Any ideas?

Update:

Here ary my 2 Throwers:
Image

And my 2 Blitzers:
Image

I think I will remove the helm blades for the linerats to make the gutter runners easy to spot.
Throwers have balls, Blitzer have large helm blades, Runner small helm blades, liners have no helm blades.

And I bought myself the rat ogre from the starter box on ebay.
Best looking rat ogre I know of.

Throwers and blitzers are looking good!! Good luck with the project!!

Maybe this helps with other teams that haven't been shown yet and also give some other perspective with some that have already been shown. They are conversions done by my brother and me for our teams. You can see more pictures in the links
