Bouncing ball after throw-in: How many squares?

Just had a discussion during my last game:
there was a throw-in and after figuring out the distance (2D6) we came up with the question how many times it bounces? I said 1, like bouncing after a kick-off (it bounces 1 time after hitting an empty square). My opponent was the opinion that it bounces 3 times (like an inaccurate pass).
I really think that it bounces just once because it will only bounce if the square is empty, but my opponent sticked to the similarity to a long, inaccurate pass.

It bounces only once, like any other time it hits the ground.

The three SCATTERS that you make on an inaccurate pass are not meant to represent the ball bouncing three times - it's meant to represent just how inaccurate the throw was. That's why the ball will scatter one more time (representing the one bounce) if the ball lands in an empty square. This is also why you can't attempt to catch the ball until all three scatter rolls are performed on an inaccurate pass.

Check P.14 of LRB 2.0. The ball will bounce, which is described in the previous paragraph (um...under Bouncing Balls), in which a bounce is defined as a scatter one square.
