Is this a good deal for a paint kit to start with

Hey guys I'm trying to get some paints and extras to start building an orc team! Is this a good deal to start me off with some paints and pieces I can mod with?? Picking it up tomorrow if so! Thanks in advance for your advice!

I was hoping to buy used to save some money, and also maybe get some parts for modding. Is that the wrong way to go about starting out??

I'd say the potential issue with buying used paints sight unseen is that you have no idea what colours you're getting, whether they're in a good shape or how empty the pots are. Ditto brushes, they could be knackered.

Vallejo Model or Game Color, Coat d'Arms, and Privateer Press P3 are all excellent (and cheaper) alternatives to GW - don't get sucked in to the brand! I'd suggest starting with a small but decent range of dropper bottles (like the above) and investing in a decent size bottle of thinner (I buy tamiya acrylic thinner by the 250ml bottle, couldn't survive without the stuff). If you buy some spare dropper bottles on ebay you can create new colours for teams using the palette you already have.

Those sprues look like vehicle sprues, so don't have a lot of appeal for blood bowl that I can see? My tip would be that whenever you buy bitz or miniatures on ebay, see what else the seller has. Sometimes you can get a load of cool arms, heads or legs for a buck extra that might come in hand down the line!

Thanks for the replies guys! I'm going to go meet the guy in person to take a look as it's not too far from my house. He seemed amiable and offered to let me check everything out to see if the bits and paints are what I'm looking for.

Figure it can't hurt to give it a go, but after these replies I'm not optimistic!!

Truth is, it could probably go both ways. Good if he really shows up to be really cool when you go to check it up, since some sellers could use it as a smoke screen to lure a potential buyer in only to then use different kinds of pressure to make the sale happen. If they do it knowingly or not is beside the question.

So I ended up picking it up for $80. Many of the paints were unopened, although I'm not sure if I can use the large acrylic paints. There were some shades like nuln oil, bases, washes, and then there were also a ton of Testor paints?? There were also quite a few figures, and also maybe 3 useful sheets of orc arms/heads/helmets(not in images), plus small bags of misc parts. I have put some images below in case any of you guys want to clue me in on what I've got. Thanks for helping me get into my first team!!

I'm really curious if the Testor paints are useful.

I may have the beginning of an orc or dwarf team.

Cool, looks like you got a few heads and arms and stuff, not too bad. At the very least you can use a bunch of them for testing out colour schemes for your teams! The greenstuff and basing supplies should ocmin in handy for you, especially if there's flock in there.

Paint selection isn't bad at all if they're mostly unopened, can see some Tamiya, GW and P3 pots there.. Just make sure you know which are acrylic (best for miniature painting) and which aren't (I think one of the pots says 'gloss' so I'd be cautious with that one. And that unmarked clear one too). The artists paint tubes are only usable if you mix them well with thinner or (more unreliably) with water - even then getting a good consistency to the colour and texture can be really hard work

Note that some of those GW pots are fairly old so you may want to dispense into dropper bottles anyway.

That chaos black spray can be messy, try to warm it up a bit (I stick mine in my pants for a while) at least to room temp and shake well before use, it will leave black dust everywhere also.

The other paints can be used, get some cheap brushes and try them out then see if it rinses out with water. If it dose then it's good to go. Always thin your paints. Google is your friend.

The bits look good too, looks like at least one ork truck there, sell it on flee bay at recoup some of that cash. Ork a like convertie bitz so shouldn't be too hard to shift.

Build both the Orc team and the Dwarf then teach a friend to play then start multiplying like one cell organisms until your playing in a league...

Overall looks like a good set, I'm jelious

NMM = non metal metal
That means to paint in a way, without using metallic paints, that the result still looks like metal.

Example:

Although this guy looks like being fully chromed, it is only painted in blues and grays to accomplish the effect.
