Simple question, is it worth buying and using a Rat Ogre in a Skaven team?
Are Big Guys as useful as they look and are they worth there cost?

Starting team or experienced team?
Kill-happy League or not
Personal Playing style

A lot more

Personally, I think Big Guys are definitely worth their prize, but you do need to take into account the nega-traits (Wild Animal in your case)

Both Skaven teams in our league did start with a RO, and he does seem to absorp some damage but he also costs them a Turn (and a score) occasionally...

Depends on what kind of coach you are. If you like to be in as much control as possible of your team, then perhaps a RO isn't for you; the wild animal trait can cause severe turn over trouble and cost you dearly.

Having said that, ROs can make devastating safetys and can add a hard hitting dimension to your skaven team.

If you like the potential to cause damage, and can live with your best laid plans being occasionally spoiled then yes, take the RO. Get him block asap.

Rat Ogres are worth their price when used wisely... As Stillgas said - ROs make excellent backstops - they're fast, and few players will survive a 1 on 1. This is also a nice way of avoiding those Turnovers caused by Wild Animal.

IMO, putting a RO on your line of scrimmage is a waste - you're just asking for a TO - especially when the brute doesn't benefit from assists... your opponent will probably swarm you to force a TO if he's on your frontline...

Finally, you've got to have at least one mini which has intimidation value in your team... and believe me, them furballs need it

I started a skaven team in my league without a RO. I went for having a decent line up in order to score Skaven-like. The RO won't support a skaven running/passing game, he soaks up damage when strategically positioned. After three games I bought a RO and using him as a defensive sweeper to kick oppononents breaking through, when he gets SPPs I will give him Block, then Pro. After that you can use him like you want and he will rock!

I've not coached skaven, but have played against them, and did so fairly recently against a skaven team with a well-developed rat ogre. Some people on this board have the opinion that Wild Animal is too negative - in my opinion it isn't. Your opponent might have the opportunity to swarm the rat ogre and hence cost you a turn. However, this is quite a high risk strategy - it requires your opponent to either use lots of players against the rat ogre, or to use strong players which are hence not being used elsewhere. Even then, there is a decent chance it won't cost you the turn and the other rats can use their numerical supremacy.

It is certainly worth using the rat ogre against elves where they'd need to use four elves to attempt to cause the turnover, but might not be against dwarves and chaos, for example.

I'm getting the idea that its certainly worth buying one and then using it from there. I was planning using it for defense mainly, due to the lack of strength in the little rats.

The biggest factor of all, in my opinion is whether your league uses star players. If an opponent is likely to freeboot a 6 strength player to deal with him in the playoffs, you might as well just work on developing your team without a RO. Also, it depends on the composition of your league. A RO is at its best when not playing against bashy teams that can challenge him back. Other big guys can pose a problem, so be careful when you deploy the WA.

And I had an AG5 elf screw up a 2+ catch to screw up royally to, so don't use them either

One bad moment does not a good guide make
