Dodge! Dauntless is a good choice too, though, and worth taking.

Basic reason why dodge is better than stand firm:

When you are blocked with...
--------------------CDwarf goes down
1 dice, no dodge.......1/3 of the time
1 dice, dodge ..........1/6 of the time
2 die, no dodge........20/36 of the time
2 die, dodge.............11/36 of the time

The difference there is so drastic that to me it is more important than standing in one place. My dwarf team has gained very favourable situations very often thanks to our dodge players.

ok then what about when they players your on the line against have tackle, dodge also doesn't stop you getting pushed back, which makes guard less effective and the same reason makes caging easier as they can't push your corner players out the way to easy blitz the ball carrier

also you can try and dodge anywhere and not worry about failing, or even run the sideline

If we asume that the player in not hurt or stunned by the block then Stand Firm IS the better choice. Player stands up, lends assist, 2 dices my choice. Boom.
Or I move my poor lonley Chaos Dwarf with Guard + Stand Firm down the Side Line... a St 4 Blitzer comes a long hits me. Cd goes prone.
on my turn he stands up. My frenzyed (along with block) Bullcentaur joins the action shoving that guy out the side line too with me having 2 dices to throw!

And Stand Firm is not only to bee seen in a Block Scenario. A prone/Stunned player on the square he stood is often better than a Player shoved into a other square (your oponents choice). Chances are to high that he can then bring other players into a better situation. And if the shove back brings you a better result then you just dont use stand firm and he moves your dwarf.

Depends on your game style, Stand Firm is good, as is Side Step.

A note on BG's for the CD's, I'd advise against the mino. He has to go first, and if you're opponant is canny he'll use this against you. You end up revolving plans around him. You've also got 2 "better" blitzers already (S4 to S5 may come up now and again), and CD's are good short ranged ones.

Howevr, a Troll is great for sticking in a mass of your players, and being a solid pain in the arse. And even if he gets carried off, he can come back on a 4+

If you're playing a smash team, just keep feeding the troll into the melee.

Oh, and the Cave troll models from the LoTR range are great fun for using as Troll models :)

Can one choose to use the Stand Firm trait? I thought you had to use it.

If you're getting frenzied next to the sideline on a questionable kapow, you can elect not to use dodge, either...

Kind of late on this one, but here's my 2 cents anyway :

Was lucky enough to roll 3 doubles on my CD's :

+1 ST
Dauntless
Stand Firm

Next double will be a Leader, other ones Stand Firm.

A note on the mino : once he gets Block, he's doing quite fine!

SBG: is that team playing in the same league as Balrog's skaven? If so, the fact that you're using 3rd ed wild animal makes all the difference in the world and you shouldn't be commenting on the mino at all. If not, then where are you playing?

I don't play with Balrog. It's the Ligue des Quatre Nations (see my www).

We started it with three friends (hence the name), using Vanilla LRB. First season 4 teams, second season 7 teams, now back to 4. Races playing this season :

Chaos Dwarves (!!!)
Orcs
High Elves
Skaven.

I won the last two championships (the Soup Bowl !) and won my first two games in the current season. One of my BC got 3 TD and 1 INT tonight, to get +1 ST !!!!!

Another vote for Stand Firm, I hate that. CD with that would be very tough.
