Bull Centaur skill progression

Post by SBG »

Hi guys!

In this thread http://www.talkbloodbowl.com/phpBB2/vie ... 3880#83880, a lot of discussion went on about skill progression for BC, so I thought a little chat on it would be fun.

I have two of them. I wanted one offensive-, one defensive-oriented. Mind you, both can score and Block, but they generally have well-defined assignations!

So Bud Spencer is my offensive guy. I got lucky on the first skill and rolled a double, then skill, skill. So here he is :
Sprint, Sure Feet, Thick Skull, Catch, Block, Break Tackle ! Combined with my AG 4, Nerves of Steel hobbo, he's a scoring machine !

He's 4 SPP's from his next skill. It will either be Sure Hands (a lot of Strip Baller in the league) or Dodge or Stand Firm (to run the line) on Doubles.

My Defensive guy, Terrence Hill (you see the link here  ), has got two skills right now :
Sprint, Sure Feet, Thick Skull, Block, Strip Ball.

He's 2 SPP's from his next skill. I thought of either Break Tackle or Mighty Blow (for a bit CAS), but at some point I thought that Shadowing could be fun ! On Doubles, I have no clue ! Frenzy ? Dodge ? Stand Firm ? You help me !

But what about other ways you would have done it ? Let's talk about it !

Frenzy should be a really good skill for a BC; imagine; you have incredible movement so you take out players by blitzing them off the field over a very large area! Very threatening both on offense and defense!

1st Bull you dont need Sure hands, get a Hobgoblin with Sure Hands to hand off to him and use the Catch skill to get the ball. This also means that you can progress upwards into the opposition half easier as you dont have to place the Bull in the backfield but a few squares behind the LOS. If he's well protected then strip ball wont matter as they cant get to him, take Stand Firm instead.

2nd Bull has got to be Break Tackle if your using him defensively as with Ag 2 he can get tied down quite easily.

I have to bull centaurs. One has block and frenzy he's a real killer! next will be break tackle, so he can blitz anyone at will! if it's doubles maybe stand firm.

Make sure that you check out the latest BBmag - there's an article by yours truly on how to play Chaos Dwarves - and there's advice for skill selection.

As to your dilemna on what to get a CD with Block & Strip Ball?

My surprise suggestion would be Piling On given that it's so broken (and useful - until we the BBRC fix it).

It also depends how you use this guy. Is he a 'linebacker' kind of BC or a line of scrimmage grunt?

My not so surprise selection would be Dodge on doubles (which you've heard before) or Frenzy, and on a regular roll perhaps consider Pro as an out of the box option.

I didn't like the article that much, sorry.

The article seems to be based more on 3rd edition, like the previous tactics article

For the Block,Strip Ball Bull centaur I might suggest Tackle too, if you want to really make him the defensive blitzer. I know that the skills overlap slightly, the reason I seldomly take both for a single player, but the fact remains that the ultimate back-field blitzer has both. Even if the bastard stands or gets up the next turn, he shouldn't be able to use dodge to go after the ball or your ball-carrier.

Piling on would rather go with tackle than with Strip Ball, IMO.
