Well I'm playing humans in the ECBBL and the playoff are only a couple of game away 60k in the bank already. I'm hopeing to get that up to ~150k in time for the 1/4 finals. Then I can freeboot Stars all the way through the playoffs - while keeping my TR down.
Take Zug or a wizard for the 1/4 final. Maybe the same for the semi and then, if I make it, Luthor and Zug for the final. Or is Griff going to be better? I think that depends on who I'm playing. Against a fast team I think Luthor might be more useful, against a slow team the leaping Griff may be handier.

Once I managed to enter the league finals with my Goblin team (don't ask how). I had saved the winnings of the last 3 matches for that event, freebooting the Star Troll, the Chainsaw Gobbo and a Wizard. I still lost against the Dwarves, though. The Star troll was KOed and never came back and the wizard did not managed to roll above AG on 5 dwarves he had blasted with a fireball. Roten luck

The more I think about it, the more I dislike star players for tournaments and league play...

Well, I think the star players are way too expensive as it is now. I agree that they were too cheap when bought permanently at normal cost, and I agree that it wasn't very nice to see a Morg in very nearly every team that could field him, but I still think 95,000 is way too much for a single match. Maybe they should cost 1/3 of the original cost (rounded up to nearest whole 5,000 or something) when freebooted. Oh well.. as it is now, anyway, I haven't used any of my starplayer minis for the last 20 or so games.. rather sad, I think. Esp since they are such great minis..

Personaly, I think for leagues, the freebooting rules are spot on. The stars normally onl come out to play for important games. For tournaments, the rules used at the BB (full cost) weren't good enough IMHO, hopefully, a system like Galak's using for GenCon will be the way to go.

Currently an ex-Blood Bowl coach, most likely to be found dying to Armoured Skeletons in the frozen ruins of Felstad, or bleeding into the arena sands of Rome or burning rubber for Mars' entertainment.

I'm not sure about the current freebooting rules. Some coaches in the ECBBL have been miffed that their opponent has freebooted a Star Player and would prefer that they weren't able to at all.
Maybe Galak's proposal to increase the costs of Star Players (i.e. double the amount over 100k) ought to apply across the board - for both tournaments and freebooting in leagues.
