if everyone has to say "good job" at everyone else's work, even when they think it sucks (and i mean no offense by that, if _I_ were to paint right now, it would SUCK and if someone told me "good job" he would be a liar), then it will make comments tedious to go through...

No, I don't only want nice comments, but I want constructive criticism this side of rude. How should a comment like "get proper brushes" help me?Deathwing wrote:Opinion was honest, criticism was intended as constructive. Sorry, but there you are. What do you want, only nice comments?
Not bothering to finish the base and then sticking it in a painting comp is just plain lazy IMO, regardless of skill level. And I believe I'm only stating what a lot of others are thinking.
Concerning the base, I thought it wasn't necessary, because the rules say it isn't necessary...

"get proper brushes" should mayeb drive you to examine your brushes, which maybe are not in excellent condition ?
and in the rules, it says that basing is not needed but is welcome. why didn't you do it to be more welcome then ? that kind of reasonning can be applied as well...

Normally I just leave my bases painted in green and so far I never have used static grass. So I didn't go to buy something I probably won't use again to do something not required to enter this miniature painting contest.
And my brushes are in a good condition, as far as I can see. I wonder how anyone could possibly come to a different conclusion without seeing them.

I just made a massive and hopefully more constructive/helpful post about shading/highlighting etc and lost it while editing it..
..won't repeat it now but will do so over the next coupla days.
Part of it though was about neatness and how good brushes help with that, looks like there's flesh all over the chain on the l/hand side of the phig, which leads me to believe there's something not right with your brushes..size/quality/condition/whatever.

No, that was pure clumsiness on my part. I hadn't even noticed, so thanks for pointing it out.Deathwing wrote:Part of it though was about neatness and how good brushes help with that, looks like there's flesh all over the chain on the l/hand side of the phig, which leads me to believe there's something not right with your brushes..size/quality/condition/whatever.
I've just corrected it and my brushes worked fine.

Being honest and being blatently rude are two different things. Saying... you are just being lazy blah blah blah is one thing (rude), suggesting someone to use a product and to tell them about a technique you know will assist them is another (proper). I'm not saying everything is all candy and butterflies... but really... there are ways of saying things that will not only make people better painters, but will encourage them to enter over and over again. What fun is a painting competition with 2 entries.
One other point is that for a newbie, the paintjob they did WAS good... good for their level. Let's help them get to a higher level. Not tell them that their paint job is crap and go learn how to paint.
Call me crazy... but last time I checked, this wasn't supposed to be a flame board

I look for a person's positive and then explain what i think they could to do "improve"
Come on.. why do people have to state the obvious. Sure a model doesn't look like LongFang's... how many do? Give me a break and give others a break too.

Define negative first
I didn't say you can't be negative. Hell... I told someone that the face they painted didn't look right. Is that POSITIVE? MAN... what is wrong with you people. You want negative...fine... i will give YOU negative. Read the damn post properly you moron!!! NEGATIVE enough for you? I said you don't have to be RUDE...R..U...D...E! Man... open your eyes pal.
Now... that was rude.... get it?
There is ways of stating the obvious without being rude is all i was saying. You dont have to look at someone's paintjob and go
WOW...great paint job ... while in your mind going "puke". It's fine to say you don't like something... but if you do... it's always proper to say why. Let the painter see your point and if they like your point(s), perhaps they can apply them.

sorry, no politically correct from me... i did not comment on the figs because i didn't want to hurt some of the painters, because some figs are really bad. now is it important ? no. will they improve ? of course they will. as i said, if i were to start painting now, it would certainly be awful. but that doesn't mean some of the paintings aren't of a very low quality. and again, saying "this painting is bad" does not equal saying "OMG YOU MORON YOU SUCK SO BAD CUT YOUR HAND INSTEAD OF PAINTING NEXT TIME".
politically correct SUCKS, that's sure.
