Well last nights game was extremely tight and I ended up on the wrong end of a one nil loss…
So I’ll get my excuses in early, the guy I was playing is a very good coach, being an ex workshop employee and a decent sort most of the time too, which makes losing a bit easier.
His team, the Man Eaters consisted of “only” four ogres but he had a full roster of Snotlings, two re-rolls an apothecary and a single fan factor. So I thought I had been let off lightly.
I was made to kick to the ogres after loosing the dice roll and decided at the last second that the best form of defence is to attack, as I was only facing the four ogres, and he had loads of replacement snotlings warming the bench. So I fielded my Black Orcs and Blitzers on the line of skrimage and hoped for the best.
At the end of my first turn, there were three ogres and a snotling lying on their backs and I thought this boded well for the rest of the game, as I’d even managed to run my thrower to the ball and after going for it had picked it up first try.
However all of the snotlings were able to gang up on my isolated thrower as his Black Orc cover was a square away. He was knocked down and the ball picked up by a snotling, suffice to say that despite suffering more than his fair share of bone head rolls, I was not able to get the ball again until the snotling scored on turn five.
I was struggling to come to terms with the snotlings, failing to beat their mighty armour and dumbfounded by their agility. My turn five kick off resulted in a pitch invasion and with +1 Fame I was able to get an ogre and a snotling down, while only suffering one player down myself.
But it all went wrong with my thrower going for it to pick the ball up and tripping (and knocked himself out), I felt I needed to do it as the ball was only a few squares from some ogres, who then broke through my line and stood over the ball. The rest of this half descended into a mass brawl and that was that.
I started the second half with only nine players as my thrower was still out of it and I’d suffered a casualty to one of my lineorcs, miss next game, which I decided to accept and not us my apothecary on with a whole half yet to play.
This did not start very well, two consecutive ones as my blitzer tried to pick the ball up…Aaaarrrgghh!
The Ogres again broke through and two of them stood over the ball, however one of them was standing next to a Black Orc and he was able to knock one down with some help, the second one was blitzed out of the way and by turn three I had an Orc blitzer with the ball, moving up the right flank with a screen of Black orcs and blitzers with only two snotlings in front of them…
By the end of turn five I was six squares away from the end zone with two blitzers surrounded by 4 snots and an ogre closing in behind me. I’d also managed to hurt an ogre forcing one to miss the rest of the game, so I was feeling fairly happy and sure of at least one touchdown…
By turn 6 I had a lot more blitzers and black orcs around, but one of the ogres had got into base contact with my ball carrying blitzer. I decided to dodge out despite not having a re-roll (bad move), I failed my roll and ended up on my face with the ball bouncing straight into the hands of a fortunate snotling, who proceeded to run up the pitch and kill the game, although unable to score a TD as he was knocked flat by a passing lineorc, I was unable to get the ball back and that was that…
Great game, despite the lack of TD’s and am looking forward to the next game against an experienced Human team.
One of Blitzers caused three casualties and I gave him the Tackle skill, thought of mighty blow and Guard, but Block and Tackle make a great combination against fast teams…
I also earned forty thousand, but will keep this and get a lineorc Journeyman for the next game
Thanks for your advice, I’ll try and put it in practice next time…
