Humans for TV100 Progression Tournament

Post by Nestyr »

Hi all,

I'll be playing in a TV 100 progression tournament, of 6+ games, and plan on taking a Human team. The team coach chooses who the MVP is allocated to, so you can quickly skill up a few players in a few games.

My question is this: to Ogre, or not to Ogre?

If not taking an Ogre, my roster will likely be as follows:
  • 4 x Blitzers;
    1 x Thrower;
    2 x Catchers;
    5 x Linemen;
    2 x RRs;
    1 x Apothecary;
    30,000 banked.
My reason for this setup is to have extra Linemen to use as the three on the LoS, and to have a decent number of each positional player, so I can make best use of the Human team's biggest asset - flexibility. The Apothecary is there to (hopefully) save a positional from dying in game one.

The banked 30,000 will be useful as, with average winnings, I will be able to purchase a replacement player, if necessary, or perhaps an additional positional.

That said, however, there is something about fielding a Big Guy at the outset. :D

I can almost guarantee him getting a skill after game one, with five points from the MVP and needing only a single additional point to skill up.

So, with a Big Guy, I think I have the following choices for rosters:
  • 4 x Blitzers;
    2 x Throwers;
    4 x Linemen;
    1 x Ogre;
    2 x RRs;
    1 x Apothecary;
    10,000 banked.
Removing Catchers reduces the flexibility of the team.

or
  • 2 x Blitzers;
    2 x Throwers;
    2 x Catchers;
    5 x Linemen;
    1 x Ogre;
    2 x RRs;
    1 x Apothecary;
    0 banked;
Taking only 2 Blitzers reduces the effectiveness of the team, but the team does remain quite flexible with the addition of two Catchers, and an additional Lineman.

(I think the Apothecary is even more valuable when you have a 140,000 value player on your team...)

What do people think? Which roster would you prefer, or would you propose another? Whichever the case, what is your reasoning behind your roster?

Cheers,

Nestyr

All,

Thanks for all the helpful advice and comments. :roll:

I've found a couple of really good tactics and strategy articles for Humans, which has made my mind up for me - thanks Joemanji!.

I wouldn't start with an apothecary, rather have a third reroll

I think it's a matter of personal style. I do like to start Humans with an Ogre, as it gives you a differentator to most other teams (which will usually only buy the big guy after a couple of games) from the beginning. However, i would not go under 3 RRs and still include 1 Catcher, as his dodge skill is really useful in the beginning. With 4 Blitzers and a Catcher as ball carrier you can make great running plays, while the Ogre helps you to gain advantage in numbers and ties up annoying ST4 players.

So this is a starting lineup i would like:
4 Blitzers
1 Catcher
1 Thrower
4 Linemen
1 Ogre
3 RRs
1 FF

Buying sequence (ignoring injury replacements): Apo - 2nd Catcher - 2nd Thrower- 4th RR

With the allocated MVP your Ogre will skill up in the first game he does a CAS (crazy stuff aside), then he gets Guard on a normal skill roll and will be an awesome centerpiece of your line.

More seriously, looking at the line-ups, I think I would skip the Ogre at TR100, but then I am crap at using Big Guys effectively.

Definitely agree with Grum on the 3 rerolls.

Started my ECBBL team with 1 thrower orgre 4 blitzters 5 linos and 3rr pocketing the rest of the cash for an apoth after game one

won 7 drew 2 (should have won one of the draws) and lost 1 and now waiting for the play offs

I've been cash rich with plenty in the bank not spending it as I've been an overdog in every game so far and didn't want to give away more inducements.

:lol: love you too, Leipy...

I'm basically just crap in general, let alone with using the Big Guys...

I also have notorious bad luck with my Big Guys - they inevitably get knocked down and injured in my opponent's first turn, hence the Apothecary - I am way too scared to start without one.

I really want to start with the Big Guy, but I don't want to limit myself to the one Catcher - I may as well just paint a big target on him and leave it at that. I consider four Blitzers to be a must, given they are the backbone of the team...

Stay tuned! New roster to follow...

Cheers,

Nestyr

If you know that wour opponent will hunt your catcher, use this at your advantage. If he tries to bring him down, or he will use to much power and leave the rest of your team play, or he will not put enough power and your catcher will probably be a threat.
Just place the catcher were he will be reachable with 1 or 2 gfi, but far away from the important stuff.
I agree on the blitzers power, this is the backbone of the human team. get some guard, frenzy and mighty blow.
