Mark - thanks very much
Darkson - better late than never, and thanks! Sorry for the delay in replying, but I've put a step by step together for the heads. Takes about 10mins to do each one, which isn't too bad really.
1. pick your head! I've used the GW space wolf heads for these, but I've done a similar method for zombies and goblins before, so this can be adapted for different races.
2. Start cutting. A really sharp blade on your craft knife makes this so much easier. With the helmet, I've removed all the sci-fi bumps and the icon on the front, so its now smooth all round. I've also cut a bit of the face off, as this saves drilling it out in a minute. The head has been cut horizontally just above the eyebrows, vertically in front of the ears, and most of the back I've carved off too. You only really need the face to make the conversion work, so you can be quite brutal with this step.
3. Get a mini dremel and scoop some plastic out of the inside of the helmet. I use one I got in hobbycraft for £20 which works fine. Safety tip; don't be tempted to hold the helmet whilst you drill the inside out! Also be careful not to go far and push the drill out the top of the helmet, or you'll be starting again.
4. When you are finished you should have a hollow helmet with a slight lip at the front. You could get away with not doing this stage, but doing it this way means the top of the forehead sits inside the helmet and makes the model look like they are actually wearing it, rather than it just being plonked on top.
5. Fit the head inside the helmet with a bit of superglue.
6. Plonk the head on your torso
7. Add Viking horns to taste. The helmet should have flat sides, but I often have to fix my wonky cuts with a bit of greenstuff to join the two bits together.
And thats it!
I've finally paid up for the NAFC in Nottingham, so I reckon I need to finish the team to take there. I'm not a million miles away, couple of players and a base to do. I have finished my Snow Troll, I wasn't entirely happy with it when I put the brush down, but it is growing on me a bit now. What do you reckon?
cheers for looking
