Yes, the pumpkin was painted freehand. It´s the only means of transfer I know from my brain to a surface in the real world :wink:

Is there a trick to do it different if, let´s say, I would have an image on my PC I´d like to use?

Very nice. The reference photos looked like the surface would get higher green bumps, but I guess that wouldn't be so nice for playing, with some surfaces flat and other a lot rougher with foam flock.

Over some surfaces, you could print stickers or decals and then glue them. For such a rough surface where even decals could be a serious nightmare, probably best would be to print one or more masks, cut the appropriate zones, and finally apply paint with spray cans / airbrush, or stencil brush. Or try to build a stamp in some kind of flexible material.
